Yeah, I'd thought of scripts - BUT
Let's say the SMTP server was set up to block
any number over, let's say, 100 or 1000
consecutive messages sent within a certain
period of time.

Again, I've read that these spammers are
usually small timers. If it takes them forever to send the
messages, you're cutting down their profits - possibly to the
point of losing money.

Our ISP requires that, when you first log on with your mail
program, you receive your mail first - before you can send
any. They said that it was in response to nasty people getting
hold of email usernames/passwords and using those accounts
to send other e-mail. Just one little way to cut spam.

I'm guessing that ISP's would be happy if some sort of
limitation on groups or number of consequtive e-mails - or
anything - could cut the spam.

Again. It's just hypothetical
