Start charging for email and suddenly we have "zmail" which is free.

However- it COULD work if the reciever of the email got the money.

A person pays $X to a service for email stamps.
A person sends you an email- you get a dime.
If they are a friend, you automatically send them a "refund" email.

There would be overhead to the system- but not much. Maybe a dollar per month for unlimited emails plus whatever balance you wanted to establish your outgoing balance.

Myself- I use a whitelist at this point.
Only people I know get to send email to me on my main account.
