Microsoft monopoly on calendaring?? I don't think so
sure a lot of people have exchange and outlook systems. There's still a lot of Lotus notes out there, but these days the move is to web calendaring as in hotmail / yahoo etc etc.

I think Microsoft have a very strong product in the Xbox/Xbox360/Xbox Live arena.
Windows is pretty safe*, but I think Office/Project and so on Productivity apps are not in such a strong position.
Their product is good, but is it good enough to justify the money.

*it's safe in some ways, paradoxically I think the more they try to lock it up, the more I want something else. I put Windows 98 on a machine a few days ago (legal of course), but by copying from one hard disk to another using Linux (cp). It was easy to and worked. I did the same thing a few weeks before that using "dd" in Linux for Windows XP. It worked, but the partition size had to be the same. I hate the lock features in windows. If they could think of a way (like a smart card or something) of making windows far more open, and yet protecting their investment, then this would a good good thing.
With better and better linux around all the time, the value of windows is getting eroded somewhat, but I think Microsoft have sufficient flexibility in price such that it will be a cold day in hell when Windows is no longer installed on PCs.
