Copyright or Extrotion
So Mary Bono wants to slow down or stop the copyright revision bill entirely. That's understandable because if copyright were still as envisioned by the writers of the Constitution the copyrights that she is collecting residuals from would have died with Sonny Bono. She would lose income.

This is of course the very problem with the extensions and additions to copyright law. They have turned what was supposed to be an incentive for artists to produce more into a reason to do less and just live on the past. The incentive to create more has been replaced with the incentive to prevent innovation and creation of new products.

A developer of housing tracts can buy one set of blueprints and build many developments, but these current RIAA owned legislators want to live on the work of others from the past and prevent us from even using our own copies of these works, which we legally purchased, on more than one reproduction device.

As for the problem that Stearns and others are concerned about, I have a problem with any law that extends copyright indefinitely as is done with the DMCA. By prohibiting the circumvention of copy protection devices, the DMCA effectively makes copyright forever.

Copyright has changed from protection of the artist's rights to extortion of the consumer.
