Isolationism, eh?
OK, so we cut all economic ties with everyone in the world. I assume that we also cut off all immigration. We no longer provide medical care to underdeveloped countries. We shut our borders, neither export nor import, and just look after ourselves. Let the rest of the world hang, for all we care.

But how would that solve the problem? What happens when Israel is finally destroyed by its neighbors? What happens when fundamentalist Islam finally takes over Pakistan, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt? What happens when the major European countries give up and decide to appease the terrorists that threaten them (after all, they can't very well isolate themselves like we in the US can)? What happens when the US, snug and safe behind its oceans, becomes the last and only bastion of individual freedom?

Do you really think that the rest of the world would be content to just let us alone? Particularly when they feel is is their sacred duty to convert us or kill us? Or when they decide that we still need to pay for our past crimes, regardless of our current intentions (certainly something those here who detest Microsoft can relate to)?

What happens after we are totally isolated?
