Interesting...
At risk of beating dead horses, Schneier is making the same kinds of arguments against the "security" measures taken by the US government against terrorism as I made in opposing his stance on the risks of "software monoculture." I said balance the costs of monoculture against the risks of a fragmented and hard to maintain ecosystem. He says you need to balance the costs of anti-terrorist measures against the loss of liberty.

The resemblance is uncanny (in bold is my replacement terminology):

Software monoculture is no different. We need to weigh each security countermeasure. Is the additional security against the risks worth the costs? Are there smarter things we can be spending our money on? How does the risk of software monoculture compare with the risks in other aspects of our lives: automobile accidents, domestic violence, industrial pollution, and so on? Are there costs that are just too expensive for us to bear?

If moderation makes sense in the war on terrorism, then certainly moderation makes sense in software architectures. Recognize that human beings make software (and NEED standardization in order to keep a handle on things and reduce costs), but make sure you understand the costs of that standardization (a unified base upon which viruses might thrive). Don't assume the latter costs are automatically so severe that they outweigh the former benefits, as our government seems to be doing in the war on terror.
