all this whining
The basic issue here is that we need to stop whining i.e. "They took er jaabs" and comments of that nature" and focus our mental energy on the real issue. Abolishing the H1b program is a band aid that will not solve the main issue at hand.

The majority of ppl that whine against h1bs are people who got laid off or people who have the whole anti-immigrant thing going. While some cases of getting laid off suring the decline are legitimate lets face it if you are exceptional at what you do, a company will never lay you off.

Software as a discipline has lost credibility after the dot com bust. Graduating college majors as a result no longer see software as a career any more. Companies are taking shortcuts with technology and end up spending less. The field is in trouble here.

What needs to be done is to spend more money intelligently on developing comprehensive computer science programs rather like the way we focused on catching up to the Russians in the space race. By getting protectionist and setting up tech unions and focusing on immigration, the costs of building software here increases and we will get behind. Look at what happened to cars, semicoductors etc.; fields we used to lead in.

We need to be innovative and intelligent in the manner in which we deal with the problems facing the technology industry. Technology can make us a very productive society and the discipline has a long way to go. Read Watts Humphery from Carnegie Mellon and try to embody the Personal Software Process. Why don't we think of things like that? Lets better ourselves and our field rather than get distracted by political noise designed to illicit our nationalism. If we prove ourselves to be better than H1bs beyond reasonable doubt the problem will fix itself.
