Investors and open source
Having volunteer labor produce the company's products does allow cost reductions. And failing companies have open sourced software often enough that the step seems an admission of desperation. Particularly when accompanied by layoffs.

How many people are being laid off from Novell, again? 600 I think, and none of them working on leveraging open source.

Investors push this for some reason.
I'd think Novell's own softwareis the main value for the company, but investors would rather see lower costs than higher sales, I think.

Those affected by the layoffs have the added burden that the company's strategy is damaging to its own long term survival. In a word, stupid.

Too bad companies have the stupid open source option available to them.
