Political types no better than you and me.
Yes it's lots of fun poking fun at the candidates as they try to get their arms around the future of technology, but are they any different than Joe Average on the street? For that matter, I see no "solutions" to vexing problems offered by those that are supposed to be in the know.

Lets face it, anyone with a decent computer, printer, and scanner can duplicate any paper/photo ID out there, at least good enough to fool all best the best trained observers. The problems of identity theft are very real and growing at a frightening rate. And people demand that "the government" do *something* about it. People demand that we control our borders, they demand that terrorists are never able to board a plane, they demand that illegal aliens be allowed to work in the US but not to carry a drivers license. In fact the list of demands seems to get quite long...

But in the same breath everyone says they hate the idea of a better and harder to duplicate personal ID system. I happen to be one of them. You see, I happen to be old enough to remember when getting stopped by a cop without your draft card on you opened up a big can-o-worms and have no desire to see it again.

Obviously the answer is some sort of balance between the publics need for security and the persons need for privacy. So far, none of the scales I've seen offered up manages to do either...
