That's NOT proteced & never was
The right to anonymous speech, political or not, has
NEVER been protected. In many cases, it's been illegal
for many, many years - and that illegality has been
upheld by by federal courts.

The most common prohibition against anonymous
speech has been a prohibition, by some states and
localities, against the wearing of masks in
demonstrations (disguising the identity of the
demonstrators). Those laws were enacted in response
to the Ku Klux Klan, whose members wore masks.

Also, anonymity has never applied at all to groups, as
opposed to individuals. Those campaign ads - usually
attacks on a candidate - have always been paid for by
groups (corporate, special interest, unions, etc.) with a
vested interest, usually economic, in the outcome of the
election. The necessity to identify the ad sponsor was
first instituted by many publications and broadcasters -
well before any law existed.
