Secrecy
Hi, John.

As long as SSL encrypts the connection, the only secrecy that would be an issue would be for those on the inside (i.e., running the servers). People get their identities pilfered all the time because they either fell for a phishing attack or a database gets stolen, but when was the last time you heard of someone getting their identity stolen from a legitimate site?

Logs, if they were kept, would be able to say who voted for whom. But nothing says that such a logging system would need to be built in to the system. It's enough to have a system that logs, "John Smith logged into the system at 12:31 and cast one vote.", and then prevented him from casting further votes. In some ways, it would be a system that's less prone to fraud than the one we have now, where dead people and people from different districts vote. Using biometrics, you could be certain that the person casting the vote is who he or she claims to be. (Remember, the system doesn't have to be anonymous. It just needs to secure whom you voted for from prying eyes.)

I think fraud would still be possible from the inside, since you could always, on the inside, manipulate the database to make "your guy" win, but it's possible from the inside as things stand now, regardless. Proper surveillance of the servers should be able to keep such shenanigans at bay, anyway.
