We already have genetic algorithms
Which is a semi-guided form of self-improvement of software. Layer some complex probability and external senor stimuli on top, combined with massive processing power and you have the potential for significant self-improvement.

I don't think it is far fetched that they will be capable of self-growth within the next 40 years. The fundimental parts already exist from self-replication to learning features and improving sensor technology. They are obviously not as sophisticated as biological mechanisms yet, but that is changing quickly.
