You, my friend, are absolutely correct - you win a prize!
This broadcast flag nonsense is all wrapped up in the MPAA, RIAA, and Trusted Computing's strategy of implementing hardware-based DRM across all media (tv, movies, and music). Its all bad for the end-consumer because ultimately you are giving away control of your user-programmable device (your pc) to manufacturer's and content providers.
