Well, size does not matter if you don't get the results you want.
The important thing is having the most relevent items on the top of the list. But, that said, the bigger the index the better. This shows the importance of back-end processing power and storage. Right now Google is putting the others to shame with their ability throw massive ammound of processing power and storage at the search problem. And, it will only get more competitive. As processing power and storage get cheaper, and the content on the web grows, the size of the indexes and the processing power needed will grow without bound. Who is the best prepared to grow the back-end? Google.
