Actually the gun was invented to murder
The gun was primarily designed to kill other soldiers. That was its first use. In time other uses became apparent such as hunting and target practice.

In fact this is usually what happens with much technology. Even the internet started out a military project in coldwar for maintaining communication between missle silos. Eventually peacefull ideals are found for the technology.

So technically the gun's primary purpose in design is to kill.
