As far as benefeiting a company I think Google stands to gain the most in the short term. Longterm, MS would "borg" (assimilate) what they could of AOL including subscribers and some "features" let everything else die on the vine.
For Google they would have a relatively steady source of income outside of advertisements with the addition of AOL subscribers. There are more "features" of AOL could "borg" than MS would. I cannot see MS trashing MSN in favor of AOL technology.
"Internet with training wheels" is a very good description of whatever comes out of this no matter who grabs AOL. I agree that MS with deeper pockets is on the shorter list of acquiring AOL.
