Apple is doing fine

But they should be doing much better. In the early 90's they were at 10-15% marketshare. Granted today's 3% market is no doubt more machines than their 10% was then, but if they had 10% or more of the market now how much better off would they be? That of course assumes Apple want's to gain market share and not remain a niche player.
