- I don't think that's the answer
-
---If you can make a limited number of these chips, enough to
supply Microsoft or Apple but not both then the obvious choice
would be supply Microsoft for the X-box as you get more sales
that way.---
That doesn't make any logical sense. If you can make X number
of chips total, and you're going to sell them all, what does it
matter if you're selling them to Apple or to MS? I'd bet that IBM
makes a lot more money per chip selling a high end G5 to Apple
than it does selling a chip for an Xbox (compare the selling price
of the final product and guess who can afford to spend more for
the chip).
No, the answer is that Apple's sales volumes are dwarfed by
those of the Xbox. Apple was a break-even prospect for IBM at
best, as the total number of chips they could sell them wasn't a
huge number, not enough to cover costs and make a big profit.
Hence, they were a lesser priority, why invest lots of R&D in a
company that's not going to help you turn a big profit.
The console market is much bigger than the Apple market
though, and the opportunity is there to deal in much larger
volumes, making it worth IBM's time to devote more R&D and
manufacturing overhead to the Xbox. - Posted by: tic swayback Posted on: 09/15/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
