Not a good question
What, his work on his site is worth nothing? His time and energy are valuless? He had an (arguably) amusing idea and built on it; he naturally felt a bit proprietary about the whole thing.

MS then insults him by offering $10 for his idea and work. He then insults them right back (to his mind) by asking for $10,000; an amount far in excess of the value of what he has and has done.

He states himself that he wishes he hadn't done that. It was intended as an insult; instead, it allowed Microsoft to mark him as a "cybersquatter" and catapult him into arbitration. MS, however, didn't think through what the PR cost would be by launching the arbitration.
