Motives
Who knows? It appears that Mike Rowe had no ulterior motives in setting up the website. I remember from the original article, however, that once Microsoft had made the $10 offer, Mike decided that it was "insulting" (my word) and asked for $10,000 instead.

So, who is to blame for escalating it? Microsoft, for maybe being a little too anxious to protect its trademark? Or Mike, for asking for $10,000 when he knew (or should have known) full well that Microsoft would not pay that without the legal department getting involved.

It's easy for us to say, now, that Microsoft should have just settled up at the beginning. But remember, the $10,000 demand came AFTER Microsoft had initially offered to settle the matter (by buying out the domain name for the original price).
