Right concept, poor execution
I think everyone agrees that MS needs to protect its
trademarks. The problem, like that of the RIAA, is the
tone and the degree of their response. They very easily
could have been civil, and solved this issue quietly, but
instead over-reacted, insulted the other party, and gave
themselves yet another PR black eye.

Offering the kid $1000, or even $100 would probably have
worked in the first place. Compare that to the lawyer fees
they've already entailed in dealing with multiple rounds of
communication, not to mention paying their various
spokesholes and PR people who've needed to be called in
on this one. It's like the idea of settling a lawsuit
(something you should be very familiar with as an MS
supporter)--even if you know you are in the right, it's
often cheaper to settle.

---Are you suggesting this "kid" is so stupid he didn't
know what would eventually happen? Or are you
suggesting he seen an opportunity to take advantage of a
situation and demand $10,000 for something he knew
didn't rightfully belong to him?---

I'm not suggesting he's stupid, I'm suggesting that he
probably didn't think that far ahead. He thought of
something (debatably) clever and funny, and put it on the
web. I don't think his intentions were to hold MS up for
ransom. Had they not contacted him, he would have
quietly continued along his way. Also note that he did not
ask them for a penny until they made an extremely
insulting offer to him.
