Dude, did you actually read the entire story? He gave a VERY good example of another course of action that could have delivered the desired outcome.

If what he states about IBM is true, here is a company that has learned (probably from this type of nightmare) that right is right, but not always worth pursuing. They've learned when to use the carrot and when to use the stick.

It may have been cheaper and less painfull for MS to have offered the $10K or even $5K to the kid to make him go away. Remember that the kid did have a strong claim to the domain name. And again, it's not like there are a thousand Mike Rowe's out there just itching to follow the path to a quick 10 thou.

I would bet that MS now wishes it had followed the high road on this issue and paid to make the kid go away.

In the end, it will probably cost more than any of us know for MS to win this case both in court and in the court of public opinion. The first won't be hard, but it also won't be easy. The second will take much more time and effort. Let's face it, nobody likes to deal with bullies. And MS is already fighting public opinion on multiple fronts. Looks like another skirmish line has just formed up.
