... and a few dollars short for the content companies.

Mr. Schwartz is right, I suspect. If this DRM is to work, the codecs will have to be aligned.

After all this work and time, Sun is trying to change the entire media ecology of the internet. Whatever its virtues, this approach would require retraction of a lot of prior decisions. And abandonment of investments.

The biggest problem, I think, will be that the content ciompanies will be suspicious of their friends. The open source approach has not gained much favor with them, for obvious (ideological) reasons. Putting their survival in the hands of these people... ?
