We still need fossil fuels
First off
"I'd also counter the argument of 1,000,000 new drivers and cars each year with 1,000,000 dead or dying not driving anymore."

Go here
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ohim/onh00/onh2p4.htm
and do a little math and you will see that IN FACT the number of drivers in the US has increased 1.5 million per year between the years of 1990 and 2000. Your dead and dying argument does not add up. Read this from the same cited above

"The number of age 70 and over drivers holding a valid license has continued to increase. In 1980, drivers 70 years and over was 8.8 million. And rose to 18.9 million in 2000. This is a 111% increase in older driver since 1980."

Now having said that:
You can take all the vegoil produced in the country right now and make it into gasohol, biodiesl or "straight" gas for that matter and it will not amount to what is consumed in a single month in the US. This is not about the farmers making money. It is a matter of quantity. Don't forget that fossil oil is also used in the product of machine lubricants and consumer goods other than tires.

Right now electric cars are too expensive and I'm sorry but the electric pickups don't have the butt to pull a trailer without over taxing the engine. Hydrogen fuel cars are having trouble with leaks in the tanks. Hydrogen is a tough gas to contain even in stainless steal.

Now on the conservation side there has been great strides in recycling motor oil. More needs to be done and more can be done to recycle used tires also. A gallon of cheap heating oil and other byproducts can be made from a 17 inch tire. Right now most used tires end up as road base in cold climate areas. That is a good thing, but when I drive down HWY 59 going into Houston I see a tire mound the size of a small mountain that has been there like forever dude, I have to wonder why.

This whole energy thing is not ALL ABOUT big oil men. It is about consumers unwilling to change combined with the oil companies resisting alternative fuels. Let's put blame where blame is due. The technology has been available for more fuel efficient cars but the DEMAND is not yet there. It is also about "Not in my backyarders" refusing to allow this country to self supporting through exploration and recovery and the building of new refineries. California is a PRIME example of this phenomena. They will not allow and have not allowed the construction of a new power plant in I think i read 30 years. I might be wrong but the fact remains California is suffering brownouts (not attributable to ENRON) yet the NIMBY people refuse to build a new plant. And conservation. Calif is number 1 in conservation initiaitves and yet they still suffer from fuel and electricity shortages. Excuse me but who is to blame? Let's be intellectually honest here the consumer and whacko groups are causing the problems, not JUST BIG OIL MEN.
