Conservation is not he answer
"I don't see any real emphasis on conservation."

California is the number one state in the union for oil and gas consumption.
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/states/sep_fuel/html/fuel_mg.html
California is also the number one state for conservation. They also have the strictest polution standards by the way (and they remain #1 in polution).

These numbers have been true for ten years now. Yet with all the movements to conserve in California fuel consumption continues to rise. Why is that you may ask?

Welllllhelll lemme tell you why. People live the life styles they are accustomed too. Availability also contributes to the "problem". Americans biotch about fuel prices but adjust.

I crack up at you conserve freaks because just about 99% of the time I see the "not in my back yard crap" added to the post.

" But instead of true conservation, we would rather just screw up the Artic and other few remaining pristine areas by drilling for oil."

Don't fight in another country to protect the oil supply but on the same hand

"The more dependent we are on foreign oil, the more vulnerable we are to terrorism and other undesireable situations."

You cannot have it both ways. THE ONLY WAY the US is going to be less vulnerable is to produce much more of our own fuel. But nooooo, don't even think about drilling in Anwar. BTW when was the last time you saw a tour bus go there. Better yet when did you last visit there. Don't even think about drilling off the coast of Florida or California. It's Ok off the coast of Texas though.

Right now there is more than enough oil to supply our needs. The problem is PRODUCTION. Every refinery is running at capacity. When you consider they have to shut down to switch over to produce 1 of 230 different grades there is a loss of production time. And 230 different grades what is that all about? I know why but I won't bore you with that.

Ya wanna know why there are not more refineries? Wellllhellll lemme tell you. Those same people that block the collection of oil in US fields block new construction. It takes 10-15 years to get permission to build a new refinery. Not in my back yard.

The next problem is the taxes that are placed on fuel. Remove those and fuel prices will go down 40%. "But Squawk, you silver tongued devil, those taxes go to roads and infrastructure." You might say. Oh really? I beg to differ those taxes go into general state and federal accounts to be spent where the gov sees fit. Ain't you ever wondered how much money your state pays to get back the fed dollars to do a project? Ever notice on the construction sign that proudly announces how much state funds are contributed to the fed funds for a particular piece of road work? Why is that?

So any time some Saudi Sheik dies or a terrorist bomb blows up or a refinery has an accident you are gonna see oil prices rise. All you can think of is conserve. Conservation won't work. The US has a growing population so how are you going to stop that when there are 1,000,000 new car and drivers on the road a year.

You cannot have it both ways
