How is that? You had patents on electronics for as long as electronics existed. Why does Japan dominate electronic gadgets then?
You had patents on mechanics since the steam engine, why is Germany renowned for its engineering and USA not?
In fact the only thing you haven't had patents on for a long time has been software and.... oh wait, you're doing rather well in software, well until recently.

And you can see no correlation here?
