Permit software patents, etc. or lose access to the world's largest market. If they refuse, the country next door may not be quite so fastidious.

And these countries are not like China, so large and significant that the US government perforce allows them tolerance in enforcement.

Still, this is essential for the US, which has little to sell the rest of the world but IP. Any US government that looks at the list of imports and exports is going to become interested in IP.

Software patents are just the price of having a place to sell produce. That's how trade works: both sides make money on their specialties.


The oddity in this article is the author's logic. Cafta has passed, full of IP protections. But, the author argiues, resistance to IP protection is gaining ground. If it were, the Cafta provisions should have been different.
