sorry, but not quite accurate....
For one, that NACE data is not completely accurate. I have yet to meet a graduate with that kind of degree who starts out making that kind of money in our part of the country. Most I would suspect intern or mentor for much less, unless they are being hired directly into a company that drives high level R & R in the computer field. That doesnt apply to developers, and network engineers right out of school, with no experience.

Second, most employers in the IT field today are looking for both whats on paper (ie. a degree) but also experience in the industry --- just like any other field. If you walk in with a track record and no degree but can show the work and experience, and a 21 year old walks in with a degree and no experience, who do you think gets hired?

The Reality behind the myth is supply and demand for IT talent...not certifications, which any 'smuck' can get anywhere in the world and stick on a resume. Demand is like in any nother field....for the talent and experience thats out there. Degrees are important, of course, and the backbone of any skill. But its the talented and skilled IT individual that is dwindling and your right, we need to encourage more kids to get those degrees. And you're also right, there are allot of people without certs in this industry. But guess, what, many of those are still employed and working right now making the big bucks and keeping allot networks and applications afloat. Our CEO doesnt care what kind of degree we have as long as we can walk into a corporate boardroom and deliver ROI to our clients and make money for the company.

The reason we are offshoring and so many computer people cant find work is because of a retraining issue in terms of the pace of IT expansion and supply and demand for high and low level IT people, which is a complex equation right now. The computer scientist and college degree issue is just a reflection of how much initial drive and focus the new kids are willing to risk to enter this field (and to their employers), in the wake of so mmany bad management and CEO decisions to undermine the IT field in general by making the false assumption that IT skills can be duplicated for less money overseas.

In REALITY thats actually not shown to be true, according to a study here on ZDNET that came out yesterday....savings according to Venture LLC was less than 10% on offshoring work overseas, with onlly 9% of that due to labor. Maybe Im reading that wrong but that would mean companies saved only 1% due to cheaper labor in India by offshoring Information work over there! WOW...what does that say about IT skills here and the work done by all these so-called non-certified, non-qualified techies in the US????

....I think us business managers in this country need to learn how to evaluate IT in the American workers today and the huge value they bring to the job.
