Protectionism
I have no issue with other nations working hard and innovating until their standards of living are equivalent to those in the US.

I have a huge problem with watching my standard of living eroded by inflation and higher taxes due to protectionist policies.

The only force preventing out-of-control inflation in the US is cheap imports. Sure, we could build everything ourselves, but where are we going to get the engineers to design the products and factory workers to build them? Unemployment in the US is around 5%, which is very low. Any lower and economic development is threatened because of too tight of a labor market (which makes companies seek labor in other countries...). Furthermore, we're not producing the engineers and scientists necessary for continued product innovation.

The US holds over half the world's wealth and over a third of the world's economic production, yet has less than 5% of the world's population. I don't think we can make our piece of the pie any bigger without some major growth in the pie as a whole. Right now, I think the biggest roadblock to our own economic development is a lack of economic development in the rest of the world. Fortunately countries like China and India are working agressively to eleminate that roadblock.
