They can still try for it
Well if they're not willing to major in business, law, or medicine, they can still try for an IT career, they're just going to have to be more enterprising at it. If they don't want that, and want something that's more of "a sure thing" for providing a good income, then they're going to have to try for another field, IMO. I know this is going to sound counterintuitive, but I've heard that some trades pay well. I've heard of heavy equipment operators, like dredgers, making 6 figures in salary...

And by the way, even if they get a technical degree, some business training might carry them further. So they shouldn't rule it out.

One area that I think has potential growth in the IT realm is medicine. I've seen this as a possibility for about 3 years now. The government has been doing some groundwork to get this started. The healthcare field is woefully behind the times when it comes to processing information and keeping records. The way Medicare claims are processed is a joke by modern business standards. They're still using data processing methodologies that businesses would've used in the '70s and '80s. I think there is a lot of potential there, if the medical field will choose to modernize. That's a major part of what's been holding it back, actually.
