we must regain entry-level IT jobs to survive
If the United States is to remain the leader in IT innovation, we MUST regenerate entry level IT jobs....not high level skills. I will tell you why...

The few IT people left today are on an island surrounded by water and running to higher ground from the offshoring water thats destroying whats left of their profession. I know...I see it everyday. The people that are left are what I call the talent or the "IT super-stars" and are staying that way ONLY because tons of top level work requiring huge amounts of experience is now coming in. Forget automation...IT is back and getting VERY busy and expensive again, despite the predictions towards the opposite. India is not changing that factor much...which is funny.

But, the talent thats left is having to retrain constantly and broadening their IT skill set year round with no breaks just to keep up, as IT is deepending and getting fatter and more complex....not simpler and automated as so many predict. But the volume of work coming in is keeping our group afloat and as long as we are current, there is plenty of money and plenty of work in the US...but not enough qualified people.

Allot of entry level stuff is disappearing fast and what that creates is an hourglass IT job market. There are no middle level people or low level jobs on the horizon to move up and intern and join mentoring groups on a multi-tier way like we used to have, especially as we see corporate America laying off those people and shifting that to Indians. Its very sad...

If this article is correct, then we have hope because on our end, we can continue staying ahead of India by keeping our skills cutting edge as we are. But there are and will be TONS of work for lower and mid-range people to support too, the huge IT infrastructure that businesses are building right now in the US. Who will have the skills to support that?...and who will be able to retrain and gain knkowledge to replace the hard-core people at the top? That group is dwindling as we speak, thanks to big business and President Bush's policies and those of his cronies. We need to have government policies that guard this process on some level and encourage it becuase IT will soon drive every thing you hear, see, taste, touch and even eat. Everything we do will be based on IT at some point. Where will the vast armies of people come from to support that. India doesnt have that nor China, despite the predictions...only a small pewrcentage of those that graduate have been shown to have the skills required to succeed in the business world and IT despite the predictions. And from an article today, those offshoring models are now only saving less than 10% on cost to those that use them! Thats nothing!

My prediction...businesses in the US will have to bite the bullet and like IBM, invest in colleges and internships and start from scratch training and mentoring people and helping them climb that latter because you cant jump to the top in this inducstry...especially at the rate of current IT complexity thats evolving.
