Overlooked point
The middle of this article has the real explanation--no, it's not a
bandwidth issue:

"Once a movie reaches the home, most Internet services remain
aimed at the PC, which remains a poor alternative to the
television for watching movies."

Okay, we're all probably geeks here, but how many people do
you know that have a PC set up in their living room, attached to
their television? Me, I don't know any, and I don't see my
parents (who often rent DVDs) doing this any time soon.

So, if you've got to use your PC to download the movie, you need
to have an extremely convenient way to transfer that content to
your television. And, given the level of DRM the studios insist
on including with any such product, that's not a possibility at the
moment. The iTunes store works so well because the customer
can essentially do what they want to do with the product--play it
on their computer, burn it to a cd, play it on the home stereo,
the car stereo, put it on their iPod. Until the movie downloads
are this easy to use, to time and space shift, this delivery service
is a non-starter.

Why would I download a movie on my computer when I can just
as easily grab a DVD that I can watch on my computer, or
anywhere else that I'd like to see it? Given that my tv screen is a
lot bigger than my computer screen, and that the couch in my
living room is more comfortable for a group than my desk chair,
the problem seems fairly obvious.
