Interesting comments from Janis Ian.
The life of a musician in the download era can be difficult. Perk, a struggling artist in Los Angeles, last week at an event held by Internet radio company Mercora admitted he makes more money selling T-shirts than records. His friends tell him they buy CDs, but then burn copies for friends, forgetting that that hurts him, he said.

Somewhere on her Website, Janis Ian says something to the effect that despite 25 albums, several top 40 hits and a Grammy or two, she's never made a dime off of any of her major-label album sales. In fact, she claims she actually loses money on her studio albums. Yes, believe it or not, an artist can wind up owing their record company, even on albums that hit gold.

How does she earn a living? Live performances.

So, apparently, a lot more is gonna have to change in the music biz before the vast majority of musical artists start to make a decent living off record sales.

Wanna know which artists consistently make good money off of albums? The graphic artists and photographers doing the CD insert designs. Over the years, I've done several album jobs where I made lots more on the album than the poor musician trying to get royalties on said album from his/her label.
