On Demand Printing is Not a Creative Profession
As a former Xerox rep I know a bit about your business of
in demand printing. Your field is not in the creative arts.
Your operation is essentially a large scale print cache, with
a vertical integration within the legal profession.

Your production machines do not need nor want a MAC
address. In fact if you are using a Windows server you
would be crazy to let your print server be exposed to the
internet.

So your choice of x86 based machines to run your
production printers was entirely cost justifiable at the time
of purchase. Your choice of Windows server to manage this
production core would be more difficult to justify than a
Linux installation but that is not central to this discussion.

A cost study by your IT department for future upgrades
might be in order. Going to Apple Xserves and Xserver RAID
(for the massive storage you are no doubt using) will look
very appealing when you do a cost per Gig analysis of your
storage costs. And the unlimited cost per seat that comes
with the Xserves can look very good when looking at the
licencing cost of Windows server 2003.

Although you have no creative workstations that would
obviously be well served by the Industry's accepted
standard, the Macintosh, even your business side desktops
would be better off by using eMacs and iMacs running MS
Office. Just ask your "top tier" management.

But, hey, if it ain't broke why fix it? Your's is a narrow
vertical market, far removed from the creative professionals
that demand the best tools.
