you get that with Open Source as well. I'm not talking about Open Source. Stallman is referring to the "oppression of commercial software". This, by definition, includes MySQL and other software which is written for the purpose of obtaining money.

To your point, yes, you have control of that software. I'm not disagreeing with you. You are also at your own risk if you make changes to it. You can't count on tech support (or the usual gang of idiots) to help you if you start changing the source code. And, as you put it, you are in control of the changes you made, which now makes *you* the oppressor! Which I don't think you are, but by Stallman's definition, you are. Since you are willfulling making changes to the software, and stating that *your* software is what you will be using, others *have* to conform to your standards if they want to work with your software.

I really don't think that's being oppressive, myself, but I'd encourage you to read Stallman's other Essays and judge for yourself. You might disagree, which is fine, but remember that's also a guy who stated that Companies would just pay people for writing Free Software out of the goodness of their hearts.. I really don't see that happening.

Perhaps this might be a better place to validate some of his earlier writings, fresh from the GNU's mouth.
