what you are missing...
is that, sure a TIFF can contain all the processed data, but it's still that processed. When you shoot and save in anything other than RAW, the camera will decide what levels, contrast, saturation, white balance, expsures, etal that it's going to apply to the image you just shot. Sure, you have some ability to set the parameters, but not nearly as much flexibility as if you did it later on your computer.

the contrast withth eprint industry is simply because.. the print industry would never see the RAW. that's all the photographer's side of it. the photographer will shoot in RAW, "develop" the image, post proces to his taste, then hand the finished image to the print person... that's why RAW doesnt' matter to the printer, but it matter very much to the photographer.
