Think again, and take it slow...
so your brain can absorb details that you're apparently oblivious to.

"It's raw sensor data, not some processed representation of that data. Even your much-vaunted TIFF format is the result of a process applied to the raw data."

Wrong - completely and utterly wrong. TIFF data can accommodate any type of image data that the TIFF creater cares to include. It can easily store the "RAW" sensor data of the charge measured in each pixel and in fact it does. It can also store all of the ancilliary data such as exposure control and gain-color maps. It depends entirely upon the algorithms and choice of data stored and all of the "features: you seem to feel that "RAW" formats include are certainly an available option. If you don't believe so, then, by all means, tell me what data is lost simply by storing it in a TIFF file at full resolution at 24 bits per plane and a CIE coordinate of each plane's color? All of which, BTW, is not captured by your much vaunted "high quality cameras." These, as all CCDs must, include in their Read Out ICs (ROICs) one or two point gain correction and missing pixel (white/hot or black/cold) interpolation. Yes, even your "RAW" data is processed.

"How many professional photographers just shoot weddings and the like? Probably more than get into the printed media."

And these folks present their work how? If it's a display, monitor, CD or DVD, then who cares about "RAW" data? If they print it in any way, then the "Print" industry is involved - get it?
