All you "Pro" shooters out there...
wake up!

White balance is totally subjective without accurate colorimetry and any true colorimetry is beyond any camera with a Bayer filter mask. You need a high end, calibrated, (minimum of) 3 CCD array camera with correlated doubling sampling (to get accurate black levels) and a minimum of 14 to 16 bits (20 to 24 prefered) per plane to even begin squawking about accurate color. In order to view this you need equally accurate equipment that is calibrated from sensor to display (print or monitor).

Cannon and Nikon apparently have targeted their high-end cameras at profession photographer wannabies. RAW data formats existed long before "standard" formats such as GIF and JPEG. Another, non-RAW format, TIFF, has long been able to support 24 bit per plane images without compression. And you know what, the majority of digital camera users could care less about "RAW" formats as they are taking snap-shots, not creating Ansel Adams images for art studios and print-graphics posters. And those that do graphic art projects know that tonal and color balance will always be subjective as the eye compensates for white balance continuously. The eye is excellent at distinguishing relative colors (this is the basis for the CIE color diagrams) but it totally sucks at absolute color. If you don't believe me, stare at a green page for 60 to 90 seconds and then look at a blank word file on your moniter - looks red don't it?

Now if you ever want to discuss image quality or image processing, read up on color theory and image formation theory. When you can describe the meaning of the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF)for a lens and sensor (film or focal plane array), let me know.
