Yahoo! New VoIP uses SIP
The difference between this VoIP feature and their old stuff is that this new beta uses SIP or Session Initiation Protocol. The guts for their VoIP were obviosuly provided by Xten, http://xten.com, they announced Yahoo! as a customer in their last quarterly financials. This is BIG NEWS! SIP is an IETF open standard which can be used for VoIP, Video and IM signaling. This allows Yahoo! to interop with any major VoIP provider now so get ready for a PSTN offering similar to Skype-in and Skype-out. Now that they are open standards for VoIP, what's stopping them from using SIP for their IM signaling? Open standards IM, total interop, a client base more than 30 million, now that's exciting! I just dumped Skype.
