Down, down, down go the prices!
This is cool. The whole thing for $250. That will sell! The idea of placing the OS on firmware is interesting. A currect project on the Linux side is to develop a way to store the OS on a cheap CDROM type device. The OS portion of the hard drive would only store modifications to the initial CDROM/DVD OS image. The system would then see the initial image as it has been modified. This would greatly reduce the amount of maintenance that would be required on a system, since most of the core files would be set in stone and any modifications would be easy to spot and analyze. Such a system could then be updated by simply changing the underlying optical media, the way one would repair an appliance. This VIA device bears some resemblence to that model.
