thank you ma man
I'm curious as to what you do to lock down your box, so I'll let you know what I do:

1. Disconnect box from net.
2. Install XP.
3. Install Sasser patch (as that one can be a bastard).
4. Install AV (avast).
5. Install Zonealarm.
6. Go into IE properties and enable override cookie handling so I can disable third party cookies acceptance (an obvious spyware delivery mechanism).
7. Go into folder properties and disable "search network for printers/drives" and of course if it's there "simple file sharing"! Whoever made that feature should be shot dead on the spot. It gives full control to the everyone group for every file/folder on your drive!
8. Go into services and disable (error reporting, IPSec, messenger, portable serial player, remote registry, and sometimes others depending on the configuration).
9.Connect box to net.
10. Download AV updates.
11. Install XPSP2 (I find SP2 is fine when you install it before installing all sorts of other crap. It is OK when you install it on a fresh XP install, but really seems to suck if you slap it on a box that's be going for a while with a goodly amount of crap on it).
12. Install spybot and update it (I only use its immunize feature, its spyware detection engine has really started to suck).
13. Install spywareblaster and update it.
14. Install firefox baby! Yay!
15. Go to my favorite site for some relief, grandma's-enemas.com!

I don't do any file/folder or registry lockdown. Is there anything you do with permissions for this?

PS -- I'd just take the plunge and get a Mac. I saw that you wanted to test out Tiger, and if you really are the tech geek type (which you seem to be) I'd just spring for it. Got an Imac G5 about 2 months ago and love it. I wasn't going to run out to get Tiger immediately, but now that its release is just days away I'm starting to get itchy for it!..
