..you fail to say is that performance takes a nose dive when you do it....

No it doesn't.
All these dlls are loaded up and run via VB runtime or the Framework.
Compiled MSIL (.Net code) runs a held of a lot faster than any VB code can through its runtime.

..(VBA based) for AutoCAD...

I don't do AutoCAD but if their API does VB then it is only interfacing to their own internal framework, C++ probably. The VB code will be controlling i/o into the processing engine.
I am working on a .Net Managed Directx application for a 3D environment.
Performance is outstanding especially if done right, the graphics card is programmed to do most of the rendering (as it should).

If you think VB out performs VB.Net/C# then you haven't seen the latter in action.
I'm a developer. You need some guidance in this.
If not me then hire a consultant to help plan your strategy.
