"At some point in the future VB6 will be phased out."

So what? It's not like applications written with VB6 will suddenly stop working, and it's not like your copy of VB6 will suddenly stop working. As is pointed out elsewhere, existing VB6 objects can be wrapped and accessed through COM Interop just fine. And that will be true as long as the .NET platform supports COM, which it will for the foreseeable future (considering how much of Windows relies on COM). Dropping COM support would indeed 'break' a large part of Windows and Windows applications, both from Microsoft and others.

If you need to make enhancements to an old application that was written with VB6, you can either fire your old copy of VB6 (which will still run), or you can make the effort to update your application to Microsoft's latest platform. The choice is still yours, and you can make the decision as it needs to be made.
