Deja Vu All Over Again
This seems to be a necessary updating to the EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) effort a decade or so ago. Sure, there's a lot of analysis and grunt work at the beginning of the process, but if it's done right, a lot of work can be saved at the back end.

As an example, a smart application for accepting an insurance application could allow the applicant to save an XML copy of the application on his/her PC to be used for subsequent applications for different types of insurance or even for applications to other carriers. This would eliminate a lot of duplication of effort. There would also be the other highly-touted benefit of XML; i.e., the ability to computer-process these documents.
