Many licenses, many open sources
The argument comes down to how restrictive the definition of open source can be. You're arguing it's very restrictive, based on an individual's decision and accepted by a number of people (what you're calling the "computer world"). John's arguing it's generic.

For me, a significant concept should not be owned. That's why I agree that basic scientific principles can't be patented.

The concept of open source should be free.

Doesn't mean there can't be a specialized definition for specialized purposes, but the concept remains open to interpreation. As shown by the number of licenses.

Side observation: ever noticed how often it happens that when a revolution for freedom occurs, the leadership of that revolution tends to become self-righteous, prescriptive, and controlling?!
Save us from those who want to give us our freedom!
