Problem is....
you're only happy at this point because you haven't been on the other side of the equation. If some big company decided you were infringing on some patent of theirs, they would drive you out of business simply by the cost of a patent defense. And there is absolutely nothing you could do about it. Welcome to the world of patent litigation in the U.S.

So, in reality, you're only undamaged at this point because you're doing the same thing as many small developers, which is trying to fly under the radar of the bigger companies. And, that's a good reason why you haven't heard about them, as you commented. The reality is also that, because of the sheer number of software patents in existence now, you are almost certainly infringing on something, somewhere. That doesn't imply any wrongdoing on your part, it's just a numbers game.
