Shove your "history" lesson. No one cares.
No one cares about the history, and most certainly not stockholders looking for a return on their investment. Every heard the term, "What have you done for me lately"? (Please, next time you feel compeled to teach history, DON'T".)

"Sun is doing this because Linux can sell Sun hardware and services, plain and simple!"

If that were the case, then there is no need for Solaris. I mean if they are just a hardware house what do they care what OS is on it? No, the fact of the matter is they have plans for Solaris to be a DIRECT COMPETITOR to Linux and to diffentiate them from say IBM. (IBM selling servers with linux).

"They have Solaris because it is theirs and they can continue to improve it."

No reason to if they are going to be just a hardware company. No the fact is it cost's real dollars to continue working on Solaris and they must justify that cost to the board and stockholders. Somehow I don't think going into a board meeting and saying we intend to spend $100 milion on Solaris this year so we can give it away and be all warm and cozzy with the open source crowd is going to win anyone over.

Consulting? Nope, Sun has made it VERY PLAIN that is a service business and they want no part of it. Makes them look to much like IBM...
