Could it be that this may lead to increased sales of Sun hardware?
Why yes, that could be the goal! perhaps it is that Solaris, BSD and Linux all run on SPArc hardware (as well as x86) may also be another factor. If releasing this technology (and the applicable patents) generates hardawer or services sales, Sun and their shareholders benefit.

Not sure where warm and fuzzy comes in with hardware sales. Sun started as a BSD house (SunOS was originally based upon BSD, later moved to System 5 in Solaris 2). This just builds an army of developers who can write software that could benefit Sun. Linux also runs on SPArc/Sun hardware.
