They need to put that on paper ...
Sun may indeed have no intention of suing open source (GPL?) developers. But what about if there is a change of management at some point (ala SCO?). Or what if they get bought out? They really will need to get this intent down on paper before GPL coders will start looking for ideas in their code. Until that point they will be considered potentially hostile. While we open sourcers are very appreciative of Sun's contributions and they have been significant, we are also mindful that not that long ago SCO was making contributions to Linux, and look how that turned out.
