Programs written in Java SHOULD be portable! This was the "promise" of Java - write once, run anywhere. Unfortunetly it ended up more like "run slowly, make proprietary extensions". Websphere, BEA, Siebel, ... all make their Java "server" - which is basically a set of "helper" Java apps that you call to run your jobs. So if you write an application for Websphere, you cannot port it to Sun Java Server, because you have inbedded calls to "helper" apps that do not exist on the Sun side.

Even though IBM charges $15,000 per Websphere license, they make MOST of their money on service. You want 24/7 support with that? Oh that will be MORE! Woe be the company that needs to have IBM on-site guys for $250/hr! THIS is the action that Sun wants to get in on. That's how they can make money off of "free" software.
